Changing from Sand to Zelbrite Filter Media

Handy Hints

There are several ways to empty the sand from your filter

You can scoop the sand out through the top of the filter. Another option is to use a slurpy pump or the easiest method is to hire a large wet and dry vacuum cleaner and suck out the sand.

After you have emptied out the sand check the laterals for cracks

To load the filter with Zelbrite it is a good idea to half fill the filter with water - this will soften the impact of the media which will prevent damage to the laterals and the media will float out to the sides of the tank.

  1. Make sure that the laterals are sitting on the bottom of the tank
  2. Cover the top of the pipe with a plastic bag to prevent any of the media falling into the pipe
  3. Hold the centre pipe in the vertical position and slowly add a couple of bags of media into the filter using a scoop - this will hold the laterals and centre pipe in the correct position and then you can safely pour the rest of the media into the filter.
  4. Remove the plastic bag from the top of the centre pipe - clean the grove where the O ring sits and lubricate the O ring before replacing the backwash valve.
  5. You are now ready to start the pump. Make sure that you follow the instructions and backwash and rinse the filter 3 times - this will remove any dust but most importantly separate the different grades so that all the fine grades are at the top and all the large grades will be down the bottom over the laterals. Now you are ready to start filtering.
