The base material for the manufacture of Zelbrite was formed by volcanic
activity over 300 million years ago.
For the technically minded it is a complex hydrated aluminosilicate
mineral characterised by networks of pores that carry a negative charge
balanced by exchangeable cations.
This cage-like network of pores creates a very high surface area of around
20-30 square metres per gram, equivalent to the area of a football field per
teaspoon
